class full of Hispanic students wearing eclipse glasses

Samantha Smith, a dedicated Spanish and ESL teacher at Colonial Heights High School, recently extended a generous donation to the Jose Maria Arguedas school in La Victoria, Chiclayo, Peru. Her thoughtful gesture has brought smiles and excitement to the students as they prepare for an upcoming celestial event.

Mrs. Smith (right) with a teacher from the school in Peru"We took the donation of 300 eclipse glasses to the Jose Maria Arguedas school in La Victoria, Chiclayo, Peru. It’s the school my husband and his siblings all attended from kindergarten - high school and where all four of my nieces attend. Thanks for all the support collecting them! They are ready for the eclipse now!" Samantha shared enthusiastically in an email.

The collection of these gently used and new eclipse glasses began after the recent solar eclipse in the United States. With the support of the Colonial Heights Public Schools community, Samantha gathered a substantial number of glasses, ensuring that the students in La Victoria can safely witness the awe-inspiring phenomenon.

The upcoming solar eclipse, set to grace the skies of South America, is a rare and spectacular event that promises to captivate viewers across the continent. Scheduled for October 2, 2024, the eclipse will pass through parts of Chile, Argentina, and Peru, offering a unique opportunity for students and families to observe this natural wonder.

The Jose Maria Arguedas school, now equipped with 300 eclipse glasses, is eagerly anticipating the event. The donation not only provides the necessary safety gear for viewing the eclipse but also fosters a deeper connection between the students in Peru and the supportive community at Colonial Heights High School.

Samantha's initiative exemplifies the power of global community and the impact of small acts of kindness. Her efforts have not only prepared the students for the eclipse but also bridged a cultural and educational gap, enriching the lives of young learners thousands of miles away.
